Ecology:
Raccoons can be found in deciduous or mixed forest. Raccoons stay around swamplands, tropical broadleafforest, xeric shrublands, temperate coniferous woodland, montane grasslands to urban areas near you. Raccoons prefer treehallow, oak and other trees, and rock crevices.
Raccoons can fit in both the tertiary and secondary consumer levels of the trophic level because they are omnivorous. Meaning they eat any food accessible. Raccoons prey upon anything from wild berries, insects, crawfish, bird eggs, banana peels, and anything they can find in your backyard or garbage can.
Raccoons interactions with their own species is slim to none. Raccoons only interact with members of their same species during mating, and emergency's. The female Raccoons raises her kits alone with no involvement of the male Raccoon. The parental care only last for at most 2 years due to a Raccoon reaching sexual maturity and maturity in general by the time they are 1 and a half. Another time when Raccoons interact is during emergencys like a harsh winter, where a male Raccoon will open up their den for other Raccoons to reach safety. Raccoons like to travel alone because of the lack of food sources found, especially in urban areas, therefore limiting the amount of intraspecific interactions amongst Raccoons.
A Raccoons can interact with other species. They are only territorial when it comes to a limited amount of food sources but Raccoons travel a night thus reducing resoucre competition. Raccoons are known for interacting with humans as well. Due to their curiousity, Raccoons will approach any species, including humans. SO BEWARE!!! ANY RACCOON THAT APPROACHES YOU FEARLESSLY IS PROBABLY A RACCOON THAT HAS INTERACTED WITH A HUMAN. THOSE ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS ONES BECAUSE ITS HARD TO SEE IF THEY HAVE DISEASES OR ARE DANGEROUS DUE TO THEIR CUTENESS.
